Record-Breaking Season For the Albertson Academy Boys: Albertson Becomes the Only Club in the Country to Land Both of its Teams in the Top 4 in the US Soccer Development Academy's 2012-13 League; Albertson's U18's Lose Only One of 35 Matches

Congratulations to the Albertson U17/18 and U15/16 boys' teams for their tremendous performance in the US Soccer Development Academy's 2012-13 season. Albertson was one of only two Clubs in the 80-member Academy to have both of its Development Academy teams qualify for the eight-team national Finals -- and the ONLY Club in the country to have BOTH teams finish in the top four in those Academy championships.

The New York Red Bulls won the U18 championship and Real Salt Lake won the U16 crown. Both of those teams were in Albertson's groupings at the Finals. As to the U18's this year, Albertson and the Red Bulls were the only two teams in the country to lose only one out of their 35 matches and to go undefeated in both the playoffs and Finals. In one of the two four-team divisions in the U18 flight, the Red Bulls came from behind to tie Albertson 3-3 with four minutes left, before beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 and the Seattle Sounders 4-0. (Albertson and the Red Bulls also played to a draw in their last regular-season match). After the 3-3 tie with the Red Bulls, Albertson defeated Seattle 5-0, but tied Vancouver 0-0 before beating De Anza in the third place match 4-2. See http://www.ussoccer.com/news/development-academy/2013/07/rapids-and-albertson-earn-third-place-at-finals-week.aspx. Albertson's U16 boys went 2-1 in division play, losing to the eventual winner, Real Salt Lake, and finishing fourth in the country.

Not only did Albertson do what no other Club did this year, but the "pipeline" is very strong for next year and beyond. In the pre-USSF league, Albertson's 97's advanced to the national semifinals and will play tomorrow in the national third place match.

Congratulations to all the players and to coaches Adrian Gaitan (who has now coached or assisted in coaching close to 400 Development Academy games since the Academy's formation), Skip Thorp, Ruben Renderos, Mike Rodriguez, and Jairo Munoz. Thanks also go to managers Rick Mendelson and Hector Hernandez, and, of course, Violette Smith, for their tireless support of the boys and program (in Violette's case for six years).

Under Paul Riley's innovative leadership for so many years, no Club in the country has accomplished more in both its most competitive programs -- boys AND girls -- and its other travel soccer programs. There are also very few, if any, clubs in the country that have more young men and women who are excelling in professional and college soccer (at the top soccer and academic colleges throughout the country) and in the US National Men's and Women's programs. (Just last week, Albertson's former player and current US National Team standout, Crystal Dunn, was named one of the three finalists in the ESPY'S female college athlete of the year, for ALL college sports).

Attached are some pictures from the Finals. You will see one of Albertson's new fans, a former New York Knicks' and Houston Rocket's coach and current NBA analyst.

Below are the Club's regular season records since the Development Academy's inception (excluding playoffs and Finals). Year after year, the Club has established itself not only as the clear top Club in New York, but as one of the perennial elite Clubs in the country. The Club has not only made the playoffs every year in the country's most competitive league, but has won several division titles and advanced to the Finals multiple times.
